Ubiquitous in Costa Rica, the word ‘Soda’ means “small restaurant serving typical cuisine” and prices for a full meal including a beverage generally range from US$3 to about US$6. One dish you should be sure to try at Soda Beraka is their Casado. ‘Casado’ is a Spanish term that means ‘married’, and that is exactly what the plate is; a marriage of basic features for a complete meal. There is always rice, beans and a salad, usually fried plantains and tortillas as well. All that is left to order is the type of meat you want. Carne en salsa (beef in sauce), pollo (chicken), pollo en salsa (chicken in sauce), pollo frito (fried chicken), chuleta de cerdo (pork chop), bistek (steak), pescado (fish), filet al ajillo (butter & garlic fish filet w/sauce). Soda Beraka is located just a few blocks from our property and is open from 9AM -5:PM for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
At only two and a half short blocks away you will find Restaurante El Encanto a Chinese food restaurant. Some of their specialties are Chinese Tacos or Tacos Chinos in Spanish which are essentially egg rolls and quite delicious. You shouldn’t miss out on their Chop-sue con salsa (Chop-sue w/ Chinese sauce) or the wanton soup. The serving at Restaurante El Encanto are generous in proportion they give you a very healthy portion and the flavor is amazing. So, if you’re thinking soup first and then a main dish, maybe find someone you don’t mind sharing with. The prices are fair, you can get lunch with a Coke or a lemonade for about $6-9 per person. Restaurante El Encanto is open from 10:AM – 10:PM and definitely leaves you wanting to come back especially as other Chinese Restaurants leave a lot to be desired.
Six short blocks away (equivalent to one U.S. city block) is a Chinese Restaurant/Bar-Karaoke. Here you can also enjoy Chinese food as well as have a drink while you listen to some music. If you visit Chi Hong you should not leave without trying their crispy chicken wings (alitas de pollos) which happen to be one of their most delicious appetizers. You will find that the staff is very friendly and accommodating and the people who frequent are from this same neighborhood thereby always creating a calm and welcoming atmosphere.
